When I used to be a teacher, I would often tell my students to go away and read some primary text. But while the philosophy you get in a Reel, or in the classroom, might be fun and exciting, there’s often the crashing-to-earth moment that comes when you read some actual philosophy, because suddenly the arguments are complicated, and they come framed in confusing and dated academic language.

It’s enough to be demoralising, and make people turn away. If that’s you, I’ve got two suggestions: two book recommendations, and an app. First, as a general rule, if people ask me what books to go away and read, I suggest two things. First, Simone de Beauvoir’s Ethics of Ambiguity. De Beauvoir writes beautifully, and her arguments are modern, relatable, and invigorating.

Second, Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. Aristotle is highly readable, but don’t be fooled, because each line, and each paragraph, has an incredible depth of thought. But there is another way. For those who need a gentler way to access these texts, there is an app I often recommend. It’s called Headway, and their tagline is ‘Grow your way,’ which is perfect because it’s about learning at your own pace, and in a way that you can enjoy again.

I’ve read a lot of books this year, and one of the most common questions I get asked is: what books would I recommend? Well, here are three of the most popular books that I have discussed this year. If you haven’t got time to read them, there is an app I recommend called Headway. It offers these beautiful audio-visual explanations of ideas and explores them in more detail than I ever could here.

If you want to check out what I mean, there is an app in my bio. Here are the three books. First, there is Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman. I interviewed Oliver earlier this year for my newsletter, and this book is brilliant. Burkeman argues that we only have a certain number of weeks to spend, and so we cannot commit to everything.

We cannot live a hundred lives, so we have to choose how we want to live and commit to that. Second is Humankind by Rutger Bregman. So much of the news these days is doom and gloom. There is a kind of collective self-loathing and misanthropy in modern media, and we’re told that humans are stupid and evil. But Bregman’s book smashes that narrative apart.

Of course, we have bad moments, but far more often we’re better than we think. Finally, there is The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck* by Mark Manson. Manson essentially defines toxic positivity, and he’s one of the best at articulating the fact that sometimes life is just rubbish, and we have to make the most of it. It’s a great reworking of ancient philosophies.
